Reflections of the Golden Age

International Project

‘Reflections of the Golden Age’ is a modern, sophisticated installation that blends Dutch Design and Italian craftsmanship. This fusion was showcased during the 2018 Masterly – The Dutch in Milano event at Milan Design Week. The project was created in collaboration with Holyscrap, and Abet Laminati. Blok by Carina developed an installation that reflects the 17th-century art world projected into a contemporary vision.

The installation features a wall and chandelier painted in pastel shades, a direct reference to the color palette of the great painters of the 17th century. The floor is adorned with a digital print that reflects the typical water and light seen in the paintings of famous Dutch artists like Rembrandt. The chandelier, the highlight of the installation, appears to have been taken straight out of a painting and illuminates the whole space from above. A coffee table made of residual plywood, designed by Blok by Carina, complements the chandelier.

The modern glass tulip vases were designed with a contemporary take on the more classic work of Artist Ettore Sottsass. The interplay of materials used in the installation is designed to surprise and break existing thought patterns. This piece creatively involved HPL, often seen as a limitation of natural materials, by combining it with hand-blown and colored glass and plywood to demonstrate the material’s visual and functional properties and unlimited possibilities.
